São Jorge's Castle, Lisbon, Portugal

The first fortifications on this hilltop were probably built by the Romans, in the 1st century BC. In the 10th century AD, the Moors reconstructed whatever fortifications were left, originating the current castle. In 1147 the first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques, with the help of northern Europe crusaders, conquered the castle. During the siege, it is said that a knight, D. Martim Moniz, seeing one of the doors opened, threw his own body into the breach, thus dying, but allowing for the Christian forces to conquer the castle.
