National Museum of Contemporary Art, Lisbon, Portugal

This museum is located in S. Francisco da Cidade Monastery (Chiado), which dates back to medieval times. It was heavily damaged by the 1755 earthquake and reconstructed. However, with the abolition of religious orders in 1834, it was acquired by the English merchant Abraham Wheelhouse.
In 1988 a fire destroyed a significant part of Chiado, including the museum. It reopened in 1994 after renovation works by the French architect Jean-Michel Wilmote.
The museum displays several works by Portuguese painter Paula Rego, Portuguese sculptor Soares dos Reis and other artists.

Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Ticket (standard): €4.50
