Salzedas, Portugal

Salzedas Monastery started being built in 1168. Its foundation is related to Dona Teresa Afonso (widow of D. Egaz Moniz, the tutor of the first king of Portugal), who donated the land to the Order of Cister in the 12th century.
The Monastery was renovated and enlarged in the 17th and 18th centuries.
In 1834 religious orders were extinct in Portugal. The church became a parochial church while part of the property was sold to private individuals.

Entrance fee: standard ticket €3; guided tour +1.5€;

Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 10 am to 1 pm and 2 pm to 6 pm.
Closed on Jan. 1, Easter Sunday, May 1, Sep. 29 and Dec. 25.

How to go: Buses in this region are scarce. Bus 3306 goes to Salzedas but there is only one a day, so the best option is to go by car or taxi (there are other interesting sites nearby, such as Mondim da Beira, Ucanha, and São João de Tarouca)
