Church of São Clemente, Loulé, Portugal

The church of São Clemente (main church of Loulé) was probably built on the site of a Muslim mosque. The church dates back to the second half of the 13th century when the archbishop of Braga commissioned the Dominican friars to build several places of Christian worship in the recently reconquered Algarve. The church was originally built in the gothic style but the earthquakes of 1755, 1856 and 1969 caused significant damage. The minaret of the original mosque was adapted to a bell tower.

Opening hours: opens only for mass, Sunday 10 a.m; Tuesday and Thursday 9 a.m.
