Ucanha Bridge and Tower, Portugal

The fortified bridge of Ucanha, located in the Douro region, is first mentioned in documents in the 12th century, for being donated by the first Portuguese king, D. Afonso Henriques, to the widow of D. Egas Moniz, his tutor. It was probably built during Roman times and its importance came from the income it provided by the charging of tolls to cross it. According to Portuguese ethnographer and archaeologist, José Leite Vasconcelos, the bridge had three main purposes: raise income, ostentation and defence.
