Mateus Palace, Vila Real, Portugal

Mateus Palace is located in Vila Real, Douro Region. It is mostly famous for being the label of a wine bottle, Mateus Rose, which might be misleading, as there is no vineyard to visit, just a palace and a garden. The palace was built in the 18th century and is one of the finest examples of the Baroque style in Portugal. Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni, responsible for a few public and religious buildings in Oporto, might have been involved in projecting the palace, as it resembles his other works.

Opening hours: 9 a.m. to 7.30 p.m. (6 p.m. Nov. to Apr.)
Tickets: €12 palace and gardens (2017).
How to go: By bus, line 1 from Vila Real.
