Ribeira, Oporto, Portugal

In the heart of Oporto's historical centre, it is one of the oldest squares in the city, being mentioned in documents in the 14th century. It was from this square that Oporto developed and turned to the river. The infamous Ponte das Barcas, where in 1809, during the Napoleonic wars, more than 4000 people died, was located here and the event is remembered by a bas-relief placed in the square.
Changes in the city in the 19th century took the centre of the city life from the old square of Ribeira to Praça Nova. This eventually led to the decadence of this old part of the city. It was only in the 1970s that renovation started, decisive for the classification of Ribeira as a UNESCO world heritage in 1991.
