Lamego Castle, Portugal

Lamego Castle is located on a hilltop, at 543m, crowning the historical center. It was built on top of a "castro" from the 5th century BC, to protect the population, probably during the Islamic Period. Lamego was reconquered in 1057 and the castle was reinforced in the Romanesque and Gothic styles. From its original version only the keep, part of the walls and the cistern remain. The keep was renovated in the 16th century to be used as a dwelling.
The castle was restored in the 1940s to celebrate the centennials of Portugal's foundation and Portugal's independence from Spain.
