Lamego Cathedral, Portugal

The Cathedral in Lamego was built between 1129 and 1191, following the restoration of Lamego's diocese, after the city was reconquered from the moors. It was consecrated in 1175. From its original version, in the Romanesque style, only the square military-like tower remains, illustrating a period when churches also had a defensive purpose.
Through the centuries the cathedral was enlarged and renovated several times, most significantly in the 16th century, when the cloister was built, and in the 18th century, a prosperous period that allowed for the general embellishment of the building. The ceiling paintings, by the famous Italian painter and architect Nicolau Nasoni, are from this period.
